The Daily Mile Movement

Back in 2012, Elaine Wyllie developed the Daily Mile initiative whilst teaching at St Ninian’s Primary School. Her aim was to get pupils fitter and boost their concentration levels by running a mile around the playground each day.

The initiative has already been adopted by 500 primary schools across Britain in a bid to cut child obesity.

Said to only take 15 minutes out of the school day, the Daily Mile has seen improvement in behaviour, fitness and concentration. Further tests are due to commence to prove the physical, cognitive and emotional benefits.

With one in 10 children said to be obese when they start school and around a third of children considered to be overweight or obese when they leave primary school, we want to help make the Daily Mile excuse-free. Particularly for those primary schools struggling to find the space or adequate surfacing.

Surfacing for the Daily Mile

Last summer, we were contacted by a school in Salisbury to find a solution for them to use the grass for their Daily Mile.

To keep costs to a minimum, a 1.7m wide, rubber mulch running track was installed around the school field.

The beauty of rubber mulch is that it can be laid directly on grass – cutting out expensive groundworks.  Although it has the resemblance of bark chippings, our mulch is bonded.  This makes it easier for children to run on and allowing wheelchair users to partake in the Daily Mile.  Our rubber mulch is also well suited in many weather conditions, so the children can participate throughout the year.

The Benefits of A Rubber Mulch Running Track

In summary, the benefits of having rubber mulch as your running track:

  • Can be installed directly onto grass with no groundwork preparation
  • It’s suitable for all-year-round use
  • Although it has the natural appearance of bark, it’s bonded, making it easier to run on
  • As a bonded surface, it allows wheelchairs to glide over it so everybody can participate in the run
  • It’s suitable for all-year-round use
