Cleaning and maintaining safety surfaces

With any synthetic surface, it is vital that your surface is maintained to increase its longevity. Surfaces need to be routinely swept using a clean broom or leaf blower to remove any loose debris. In case of excessive dirt, wet pour surfaces may be power washed on a low setting. It is important that a high pressure setting is not used as this can damage the surface. Bonded rubber mulch surfaces can be cleaned using a hosepipe and clean water. Power washers should not be used on rubber mulch surfaces as they may damage the integrity of the surfacing.

Should your surface become contaminated with sap from overhanging trees, rinse the surface immediately in order to maintain the porosity of the surface and prevent staining.

During the winter months, should ice form on your surface a chemical de-icer can be used such as Magic Ice Melt which is non-toxic to humans, animals and vegetation. Rock salt or grit should NOT be used as this can abrade the surface, reduce the porosity and leave a slippery residue.

They maintenance program for your surface will depend on the usage of the surface. Heavily used play areas will require more maintenance than a less frequently used area. A guideline to a typical maintenance schedule is as follows

  • Daily – Inspect the surfacing for any vandalism or excessive wear
  • Weekly – Visually inspect the surface for any foreign objects and remove them using a broom, leaf blower or hosepipe. Remove any newly embedded weeds and treat as necessary with weed killer
  • 6 Monthly – Inspect surfacing for any significant wear and tear and report any issued to Billy Bounce. Clean surfacing using a hosepipe or power washer on a low setting as set our above.

Repairs

There may be times, due to vandalism, accidental damage or fire damage, that the surface requires repairing. Billy Bounce can provide a rapid repair service and using the same materials, will repair any damaged area. We recommend that repairs are carried out in an alternative colour to make a “feature” of the repair which will add to the aesthetic of the surface rather than simply repairing in the same colour. Please contact us if you have a surface which required repairing.

For small areas (less than 1m²) Billy Bounce can supply repair kits which will allow repairs to be carried out without the need for sending one of our install teams. The repair kit will come with all of the necessary materials and instructions for you to carry out the repair on your surface
